Natal Strength Coach
Hi! I'm Jo, The Natal Strength Coach.
It means a lot that you are here, I am a mother to
Ezra, Daisy and Bear, body builder, pre- and post
natal exercise specialist, and female strength and
hypertrophy coach for women who are wanting to
intentionally train to build muscle and strength
throughout pregnancy, postpartum and beyond
It began in 2017 with my first pregnancy. Coming
from a background in bodybuilding and resistance
training, I knew I wanted to keep somewhat of a
normal exercise routine throughout my pregnancy,
but all the advice I received was something along
the lines of “You shouldn't be lifting more than 5 kg
while pregnant” OR “Just keep doing what you've
always done” - ring any bells?
Not fully satisfied with this advice I began digging
into the current research available on resistance
training during pregnancy, (Im someone that is
skeptical about everything I am told). I soon
realized that the advice I was given was the result
of outdated information and a lack of knowledge
At the time, I overlooked intentionally training
throughout pregnancy. I moved to feel good, I
completed random exercises, and threw in some
cardio when I felt like it but I didn't have a
structured plan that supported my pregnant
body to transition from maiden to mother.
What I learnt, and what I’m here to help teach
other women, is that there IS a difference between
EXERCISE and TRAINING. Training is intentional;
exercise isn't. As much as group classes are great
for social connection and overall movement they do
not intentionally train the female athlete to thrive.
So as I progressed through consecutive
pregnancies I broadened my knowledge as a
coach and I began to train my body to become
conditioned to the effects of pregnancy. I focused
on things like pelvic and core stability, Internal and
external rotation, pelvic floor mobility, breathing
mechanics, and overall strength. There was
intention behind my training again which
ultimately set me up for a postpartum
period without pain or discomfort.
3 babies later, a worldwide pandemic and a place
to call home on the Mornington Peninsula, I have
made it my mission to demystify pre and post
natal exercise so women feel empowered to
strength train to build muscle and strength
during pregnancy, postpartum and beyond.
